Independent Study - 2

Is Culture Sustainable?

Examples:

Opinion pieces:

"Without regular trips “back home” or strong relationships through cultural associations, I wonder if my own kids will simply ... lose their culture. And if they do, what exactly have they lost?"

"Culture is about more than food or colourful clothing. It is a mindset, a way to experience the world and navigate one’s place within. Culture is family and history and tradition."

"In contrast, my kids don’t struggle with the same identity issues. They don’t feel the tug of war between the culture of “back home” and here. For them, “back home” is a historical fact, not a living reality."

Article:

"Diminished identity is a factor of displacement creating a higher order construct of complicated grief, according to extensive research by Dr. A.K. Tay of the University of New South Wales in Australia."

Mapping

An Entry Point

Constructing multi-cultural conversations at work

I was at work completing some independent study and one of my colleagues came across my mapping for culture and loss of culture. She began to analyse the key words and how they impact her life as a whole and on a daily basis.

"If my sons didn't know about their culture and where they come from their values would shift and be much different. Culture impacts our values."
